Valderrobres
a paradise in the Matarraña region

The streets of Valderrobres make up an architectural complex in which an urban nucleus extends from the Santa María La Mayor Church and the Castle to the river slope.

Between stones, walls, floors, paths and corners, Valderrobres is created on himself. From the year 1390 the process of walling and fortification of the helmet began, also building the stone bridge that welcomes the place, crossing the river. It is a solid construction prepared to withstand the vicissitudes of the trunks and flows of the river. The Portal de San Roque was the one that closed the main access through this bridge, under a semicircular point and niche with the image of the patron saint of the town. Even today remains of the old walls can be seen in several streets of the town, especially the Portal Vergós.

The Palau is an example of Gothic architecture in which you can see, as the old administrative house of the town, construction elements from this period. La Fonda de la Plaza is another building that preserves the typical elements of these ancient times such as the corner tower, the battlements and the gargoyles. Also noteworthy are the medieval jail and the so-called Torreón de Valentinet, which is in ruins.

Els Ports Natural Park is located between the Baix Ebre, Montsià and Terra Alta regions. Its abrupt forms and its two clearly differentiated climates are characteristic, as well as its rich biodiversity. From the perspective of biodiversity, the Park is home to more than a thousand botanical species. In addition, it has become the most important Hispanic goat reserve in the State.

The visitor will find two clearly differentiated climates: on the southeast slope the landscape is typically Mediterranean, but in the western part the temperature becomes colder and with more rainfall at heights that exceed a thousand meters in altitude. The highest point is Mount Caro (1,447 meters), from where you can see the Pyrenees and the Balearic Islands if the day is clear.
